Mechanical Garden
Mechanical Garden can be experienced in Factor IJ Amsterdam from 4 to 21 September. With an exhibition, live art in motion and workshops, BetweenTwoHands shows the mechanics behind objects and allows you to investigate them yourself. BetweenTwoHands poetically creates space for reflection on recognizable human experiences and social themes.
Mechanical Garden
Automata
Mechanical Garden is a theatrical object installation based on automata activated by the performers. Automata were originally autonomously functioning machines, often without any user function. They used to be shown at fairs, among other things, to amaze people. While at the beginning of the 20th century, automata were lovingly made by craftsmen, the industrial revolution ensured that artisanal production had to make way for the assembly line. It is precisely that work process that has alienated us from the things we produce and the natural resources we deplete.
About BetweenTwoHands
Their maker's mentality and shared interest in philosophy brought Erin Tjin A Ton (NL, 1985) and Gosia Kaczmarek (PL, 1981) together. Since 2015 they have been working together as artist duo BetweenTwoHands and have developed five spatial installations at the intersection of theater and visual arts. The works of BetweenTwoHands are meticulously crafted with a love for technology and craft. During the intuitive making process, Erin and Gosia confront the resistance of the material, such as ceramic, paper and wood. With their hands they bring objects to life that interact with the audience.
