The 1st EU capital to endorse the Plant Based Treaty

Amsterdam is the first EU capital to sign the global Plant Based Treaty, leading the way in the transition to a more plant-based diet alongside other international cities. The treaty focuses on combating the climate crisis through dietary changes. Beyond endorsement, Amsterdam aims to lead in plant-based foods, planning a 60% plant-based diet by 2030.

#1 Europe's biggest consumers of meat substitutes

In a region with a population of 2.5 million residents, individuals in the Netherlands rank among Europe's largest consumers of meat substitutes. Additionally, with a substantial influx of visitors reaching 20 million annually, the region serves as an ideal testing ground.

60% plant-based diet for residents by 2030

Local individuals and companies are dedicated to reimagining our relationship with food and pioneering new approaches to nourishment. Amsterdam is actively positioning itself as a frontrunner in the global transition towards plant-based foods. In 2021, the city revealed ambitious plans to incentivise residents to embrace a diet comprising at least 60% plant-based choices by 2030.

#4 in the top cities for vegan and vegetarian eateries

Happy Cow, a platform dedicated to vegetarian and vegan dining options, recently unveiled its Top 10 Vegan-Friendly Cities globally, with Amsterdam securing the fourth spot. The city is home to 645 eateries offering plant-based options, with 12% being fully vegan. Amsterdam also hosts 532 eateries with vegetarian options and 113 with both vegan and vegetarian offerings, illustrating its growing plant-based dining scene.

Cutting food waste by 50% by 2030

The municipality's Food Strategy (2023-2026) aims to improve access to healthy, sustainable food options in Amsterdam through collaboration with social organisations and educational institutions. Key actions include reducing food waste, promoting plant-based foods, and ensuring fair prices for locally sourced products. Efforts also focus on fostering food equity, promoting healthy eating, and supporting entrepreneurship in the food sector.

Top 5 in Europe for agritech

The Netherlands ranks in the top 5 in Europe for investments in agrifood tech, highlighting its global leadership in agrifood innovation. Moreover, the food ecosystem in the MRA has seen a surge in funding rounds recently, indicating growing investor interest and a promising landscape for innovation and entrepreneurship. The Randstad area has the highest number of FMCG sector employees among European metropolitan regions, driving its dynamic economy and making it a sought-after destination for businesses in this industry.
