The City of Amsterdam's internships: opportunities galore

The City of Amsterdam is a large, multifaceted organisation that employs over 15,000 people, and 1,800 students undertake their internship there each year. Of course, the organisation is constantly innovating to stay ahead of the curve, so there are plenty of internship opportunities, particularly in developing the spatial and economic factors that make Amsterdam such a thriving city – as well as in providing high-quality services to the city’s residents, businesses and visitors.

The City of Amsterdam has seven city districts: Centre, Nieuw-West, Noord, Oost, West, Zuid and Zuidoost. Each district has its own City Office (stadsloket) that mainly focuses on city policies such as passport and permit applications, but they also work on implementing the city’s social healthcare, youth, employment and housing policies.

Learn invaluable skills

An internship at the City of Amsterdam is an amazing chance to develop your skills in a dynamic environment, and every intern is assigned to an excellent mentor and a programme that matches their educational background. International internships are typically in departments such as spatial planning and sustainability, city archiving and economics.

In cooperation with IN Amsterdam, the Internship Office aims to make it easier and more accessible for international students to do an internship at the City of Amsterdam or the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area (AMA). The City of Amsterdam hopes for a long-term commitment from international students to both the organisation and the capital. In addition, IN Amsterdam produces a 'My First Month booklet' that contains useful information for international newcomers, including FAQs, helpful contact information, lists of important service providers and more.
