Amsterdam-based Source.ag has raised $17.5 million to expand its AI-powered platform for greenhouse farming, bringing total funding to over $60 million and strengthening the city’s role in sustainable food innovation.

Source.ag reflects the region’s strength in data-led agriculture

Amsterdam-based agtech company Source.ag has secured $17.5 million in a Series B funding round led by Astanor Ventures, with strategic backing from Enza Zaden and the grower cooperative Harvest House. The new round brings the company’s total investment to more than $60 million in just five years, signalling growing investor confidence in the potential of applied AI to transform how fresh produce is grown.

Founded in 2020, Source.ag develops AI software for Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA), a system of greenhouse growing that utilises data, sensors, and automation to produce food efficiently with minimal land and water usage. The company’s AI platform helps growers make data-driven decisions, predicting yields, optimising irrigation and improving crop quality and consistency. Its software is now used in more than 300 greenhouses covering over 2,500 hectares across 18 countries, contributing to the daily supply of tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers for around 40 million people.

The investment comes at a time when greenhouse production faces mounting challenges: global demand for fresh produce is increasing, while a shortage of experienced growers is creating operational gaps. By digitising cultivation expertise and acting as an “AI co-pilot” for growers, Source.ag aims to close that gap, enabling producers to scale sustainably while using fewer resources.

This Series B round confirms the industry's belief in our vision: food chain innovation requires AI companies to partner closely with the industry… Our ambition is to sustainably feed everyone with sufficient fruits and vegetables. This investment confirms the market views us as the definitive AI partner leading the sector into the future.

From Amsterdam to the world’s greenhouses

The latest funding round also signals how Amsterdam is carving out a distinctive role in the global food transition. The city has become a breeding ground for agtech innovation, where technology, sustainability and food production converge.

Alongside Source.ag, companies such as Growy, which operates fully automated vertical farms, and Agurotech, developing sensor-driven irrigation and soil monitoring tools, are redefining how food is grown and managed. Together, they show that Amsterdam’s ecosystem is maturing beyond experimentation and proving that the city’s combination of agricultural expertise and data-driven innovation can help shape the future of sustainable food production.
