GIGA Storage launches Amsterdam’s largest battery system

Published on 30 October 2025 at 12:06
In Amsterdam’s Westpoort (Western Gateway or Western Port), the Giraffe battery system has officially come online. Developed by GIGA Storage, the project marks an important move to relieve pressure on the Dutch electricity grid and improve the city’s capacity to store and distribute renewable energy efficiently.

The Giraffe battery helps optimise clean-energy use

Amsterdam has activated its most powerful battery system to date from its Amstelveen headquarters. GIGA Storage announced the launch of Giraffe, a large-scale battery installation in the city’s Western Port area. The system will help balance the national grid and strengthen Amsterdam’s renewable energy network.

Founded in 2018, GIGA Storage has delivered the Rhino and Buffalo battery parks in Lelystad and is now building Leopard in Delfzijl, one of Europe’s largest energy storage projects at 300 MW and 1,200 MWh. The company aims to install 4 GW of storage across Europe by 2030.

The Giraffe project marks another step toward a safe, reliable, and future-proof electricity supply.

Kevin Dijkers, CEO of GIGA Storage

Giraffe is a large battery system of 12 Tesla Megapack 2XL units that can store 47 megawatt-hours of energy and deliver up to 10 megawatts of power, enough to charge around 9,600 electric cars in total. Built to last 20 years, it currently supplies the national grid but could soon support local businesses through the Amsterdam Port Energy Cooperative (ECAH), helping reduce grid congestion and build a more sustainable energy network.

Powering a future-ready Amsterdam

The project supports Amsterdam’s goal to become climate neutral by 2050 while strengthening the circular and cleantech economy emerging across the metropolitan area. As the city electrifies its port, industries, and mobility systems, energy storage will play a crucial role in keeping the grid stable and future-ready.

Recent local developments, such as Return’s new battery recycling plant, GIGA Storage’s large-scale energy systems, and Photon Energy’s solar projects, show how Amsterdam is turning ambition into action on clean energy and sustainability.
