Amsterdam circular startup Droppie raises €4.2 million to scale one-stop recycling model
Founded in 2024, Droppie is tackling a common challenge in the circular economy: recycling can be confusing, time-consuming and fragmented. Instead of requiring people to use multiple collection points, Droppie brings different waste streams together under one roof, from textiles and electronics to plastic packaging, used cooking oils and deposit cans and bottles.
Why this matters for Amsterdam
Amsterdam has made the transition to a circular economy one of its key priorities. A major challenge is ensuring that valuable materials stay in use rather than being lost through contamination, incineration or disposal.
Droppie's model is designed to address this problem by making recycling more convenient and rewarding. Through the company's app, users can track the materials they return, earn rewards or donate their earnings to charity.
The concept has already gained significant traction. More than 70,000 households use the service, resulting in over 380,000 store visits and the collection of more than 477,000 kilograms of reusable materials. Through a partnership with Statiegeld Nederland, Droppie has also facilitated the return of more than 10 million cans and bottles.
Building a circular and inclusive economy
The new funding will support the expansion of Droppie's collection network and the development of a material registration system that improves traceability throughout the recycling process. Better tracking can help ensure that valuable resources are recovered and reused more effectively.
The company's growth also reflects broader European efforts to reduce dependence on imported raw materials and strengthen local circular supply chains. By improving how materials are collected and processed, businesses like Droppie can help turn waste into a resource.
Alongside its environmental goals, Droppie is also focused on social impact. The company aims for around 30% of its workforce to consist of people who need additional support in accessing the labour market, combining circular innovation with inclusive employment opportunities.
As Amsterdam continues to invest in circular solutions, Droppie offers an example of how practical, everyday services can help make sustainable behaviour easier for residents while creating economic and social value.
