In Amsterdam, efforts to move toward a circular economy are ongoing. Increasingly, businesses in the Meetings and Events industry are joining the movement for a more sustainable, circular future. One example is the recent partnership between DoubleTree by Hilton Amsterdam Centraal Station and the Dutch-based material collection start-up Oscar Circulair.
Oscar Circulair operates using small, lightweight electric collection vehicles that visit the hotel twice a day, seven days a week, to collect pre-sorted waste. The collected materials are then further separated and transported by boat to the Western Port Area for processing. Paper, cardboard, glass, organic material, plastics, beverage cartons, and coffee grounds are each processed separately.
Beyond logistics, Oscar Circulair also creates social value by employing people with a distance to the labour market. This approach strengthens local communities while supporting the city’s wider sustainability ambitions.
While Oscar Circulair’s system reduces residual waste, lowers CO₂ emissions, and increases the recovery of recyclable materials, the primary goal of the partnership with DoubleTree by Hilton Amsterdam Centraal Station is to further minimise residual waste. The impact is already visible: the share of residual waste has dropped from 79 to 65 percent, with plans to reduce it even further in the coming phases.
This collaboration is a reflection of the collective effort to help Amsterdam achieve its goal of becoming a fully circular city by 2050. By rethinking waste collection and embedding social value into daily operations, DoubleTree by Hilton Amsterdam Centraal Station and Oscar Circulair demonstrate how practical partnerships can lead to real, measurable impact.
