Syrian freedom meal
On May 5 we celebrate our freedom together. Join us for the large Syrian freedom meal with 3 courses, prepared by members of the IN MY BACKYARD community.
Syrian freedom meal
Talking together about freedom and unfreedom
The core of this special freedom meal is the meeting at the dining table with newcomers to Amsterdam with a history of flight and rooted Amsterdammers. Together we talk about freedom and unfreedom, because freedom is never self-evident.
IN MY BACKYARD is a community consisting of neighborhood groups with new and local Amsterdammers from all over the city. The community invites everyone to this evening.
Musicians Without Borders provides the musical accompaniment with the Sudanese band 'Brothers'. The Sudanese brothers already played together in their home country, but had to flee to the Netherlands. Now they live in an AZC in Friesland. Between courses we will also hear the story of the director of Musicians Without Borders, Laura Hassler, and her passion for bridging differences and creating mutual understanding with music.
After the meal there is time for dancing and fun. We push the tables and chairs aside and receive a workshop in the Dabke dance. Dabke is the authentic Arabic dance that brings people together. Everyone is welcome!
