Mutability Yannis Kyriakides, Darien Brito, Theun Mosk, Asko|Schönberg
Wandering around in the music as if among the trees of a forest. Intimate, vast and awe-inspiring at the same time. Twelve solo instruments come your way. They reflect musical characters, as changeable as life itself. This performance is part of the Holland Festival and can be seen in Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ.

Twelve composers, twelve miniatures of two to three minutes
For Mutability, composer Yannis Kyriakides asked twelve other composers to write miniatures of two to three minutes. A number of them perform the music themselves, alongside the musicians of Asko|Schönberg. 'Each piece tells its own story,' says Kyriakides, 'which is not expressed in language but embodied by the musicians.'
The music sounds live, but also transformed by a series of algorithms that continuously mutate the pre-recorded image and sound of the soloists. In a hallucinatory space, designed by Theun Mosk, soloists, image projections and electronics meet.
The audience moves freely through a concert installation, constantly changing, populated by ghostly reflections of the original miniatures. Sometimes the identity of the instrument can be heard, other times not. From the twelve intersecting paths of life, an enchanting music grows to linger in for a while – the full six hours of the mutation process, or part thereof.
The concert installation Mutability consists of four parts that can be visited as a whole (with a passe partout) or separately. Each part lasts 1.5 hours and offers a full experience. During the performance, the audience is allowed to enter and exit and move freely through the hall. Food and drinks are available in the Music Building.
