Almere

Almere is a thriving city with ambitious investment plans for both business and residential areas. Although some cities in the Netherlands may be struggling with a shortage of space and labour, Almere – just 25 minutes from Amsterdam and Amsterdam Airport Schiphol – has grand expansion plans. By mid-2030, the current population of 185,000 will have doubled and the number of businesses will expand to provide jobs for these new arrivals.

Over a thousand new companies a year

Almere: a dynamic business centre with growing population and ambitious plans for business investment

Almere is a dynamic business centre with construction and development plans progressing quickly. Each year the local chamber of commerce registers 1,100 new companies. Business sector growth exceeds 10% a year.

An increasing number of foreign companies are opening offices in Almere and this looks set to grow. Currently, over 100 foreign companies are settled in Almere, with additional applications being processed.

Expansion

Almere offers many advantages as a business location for foreign companies. Young, highly trained professionals are over represented here, and most of them are looking for jobs closer to home. Currently, 40,000 people living in Almere work outside of the city. Each new company which opens here is flooded with applications, a unique situation in the Dutch labour market.

Transportation links are being improved. As of the end of 2012, Almere will be on the Hanzelijn route, a high-speed train line connecting northeastern provinces to the west of the country. Train connections between Almere and Amsterdam are already regular and reliable.

Almere: high speed city

Almere is well connected in other ways. The city benefits from a fibre optic project, unique in Europe. Every business and household has access to high-speed broadband from 2010. An increasing number of ICT companies, data centres and business service providers are choosing Almere for their business locations.

Foreign and Dutch companies involved in biotechnology and medical technology are settling in Almere and the city is also a popular base for pan-European sales and distribution organisations.

Almere is the fastest growing centre in the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area and is keen to maintain this reputation.
