Saarein

Café Saarein dates back to 1978 when a group of ten women took over the bar from a certain Saar and Rein. This traditional Amsterdam pub is located in the picturesque Elandsstraat and calls itself 'the ideal place to flirt, have a drink and play pool' for a gay-friendly audience.

The future of Saarein

Café Saarein, a household name in the Amsterdam lesbian and queer scene for decades, is preparing for a new phase. The current owner, Dia Roozemond, is retiring after 25 years of running the café with passion, and so an uncertain future of this brown café in the Jordaan looms.

Two young barmaids, Talisa Harjono and Sterre Marijn Krot, supported by activist entrepreneur Sebastian Kersten, want to keep the café at all costs. They want to take over the café - with the help of more than thirty volunteers from the queer community - and transform it into a foundation that is run for and by the community.
