Innovation and entrepreneurship in health

The Amsterdam Health & Technology Institute (AHTI) is the driving force behind the Amsterdam Life Sciences District. In partnership with the City of Amsterdam and Amsterdam UMC – the unifying title of the city’s two major university hospitals – the organisation is committed to improving the health of citizens in the region, accelerating entrepreneurship in health and technology, and forging partnerships that will not only serve the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area but result in innovative and sustainable healthcare solutions around the world. In developing the Amsterdam Life Sciences Hub, AHTI is creating an environment in which entrepreneurs, scientists and academics can collaborate and inspire each other – no matter if you’re a startup with a bright idea, one of the city’s major healthcare players, or a multinational pharma company. The ecosystem of the Amsterdam Life Sciences Hub includes work in the fields of MedTech, e-health, gene therapy, and academic institutions focused on the fields of cardiovascular disease, oncology, neurology and immunology.

Situated in the southeast of Amsterdam, the location is perfect for doing business and collaborating with partners in the region and abroad. Amsterdam UMC sits right on the doorstep (the AMC campus is situated in the Amsterdam Life Sciences District itself, while the VUmc campus is just a short drive or metro ride away). What’s more, the A2 and A9 motorways provide easy access to the rest of the Netherlands, while Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is just 15 minutes away by road or public transport. Amsterdam Science Park is also just a short hop away, as are many of the major data centres connected directly to AMS-IX.

Amsterdam Health and Technology Center

At the heart of the Amsterdam Life Sciences District is the Amsterdam Health and Technology Center (AHTC). A former banking headquarters, this renovated office complex has become home to as well as a growing number of health-tech community that includes startups, scale-ups, renowned companies and public organisations. The building’s 4 towers are connected by 3 atriums, with workspace available for some 2000 people, plus meetings rooms and shared spaces.

Of course, there’s much more going on in the Amsterdam Life Sciences District. The entire neighbourhood is developing fast, as it’s one of the few areas in Amsterdam that affords space to build and expand. That’s perfect for established companies who’re growing out of their existing premises, and ideal for startups who can start small in a multi-tenant property and expand as needed.
