Waag Open: The Silicon Passion
We have embraced Big Tech en masse. But is it a warm embrace or a suffocating stranglehold? Come to Waag Open on Maundy Thursday and witness a debate of evangelical proportions between tech nerds, technology and users.
Waag Open: The Silicon Passion
The Silicon Passion
Gone are the days when Big Tech, data-trading and bubble-creating, could run undisturbed. But real regret and change are not forthcoming. In The Silicon Passion, the Transmission (David Schwarz and Derk Stenvers) are looking for a way out of the pit that technology has dug for them. Looking for a new relationship with Big Tech.
They draw inspiration from one of the most important stories about penance: the crucifixion. With Bach's St Matthew Passion, live synthesizer music, audio and video technology and a parade of colorful characters, they look for who or what exactly should be nailed to the cross, and what the world could look like after a resurrection.
Wag Open
Waag opens its doors every first Thursday evening of the month! Come along to discuss and do. Because we don't just discuss social themes and the future - you also always learn something practical. Something you've always wanted to try out, like the 3D printer in the FabLab, or something you never expected, like figuring out how DNA works in our biotech lab. Waag Open takes place in (one of) the production areas on the first and second floor of the historic Waag building on Nieuwmarkt.
Accessibility
Because the Waag building is a protected monumental building, it is unfortunately not equipped with a lift. This event takes place in the Makers Guild on the first floor of the Waag building.
If you are short on cash and would like to participate in this event, please contact tanja [@] waag [dot] org.
Special collaboration
In 2021, media lab SETUP asked several artists to look for inspiration for penance and forgiveness for the sins of big tech with the help of the Matthäus Passion. The group composed of multidisciplinary theater collective De Transmissie and musician Rodrigo Ferreira provided a stunning end result with a livestream performance from Theater Kikker and Pakhuis de Zwijger in April 2021. The performance was further developed in 2022 and was performed at SPRING Festival and May Contain Hackers, among others. .
