The Skin of our Teeth
First performed in 1942 when America was on the brink of war, Thornton Wilder created an absurd and comical reality on stage.
The Skin of our Teeth
Absurd reality
During the first act, a block of ice comes from Canada, marking the beginning of an impending ice age. This sets the tone for stress and the arrival of refugees seeking safety. Wilder introduces the audience to George Antrobus and his wife Maggie, their children Henry and Gladys, and their attractive maid Lily Sabina Fairweather in the middle-class New Jersey town of Excelsior. George is an inventor, and the characters get lost in their absurd reality.
