Pinocchio | The Dutch Marionette Theater (4-10 years)

The original story by the Italian writer Carlo Collodi (1826-1890) was taken as the starting point for this adaptation of Pinocchio. Of the 36 chapters, the Dutch Marionette Theater plays the most important scenes that appeal most to children and so that they can identify with the character Pinocchio. It is a challenge to have a “doll” play between dolls that are supposed to look like “people” and that “doll” that later turns into a “real boy”. Like the original story, this play is set in nineteenth-century Italy.

The story

In the forest, a branch of a pine tree is enchanted by the blue fairy, and found by poor Gepetto. Unsuspectingly, Gepetto makes a doll out of this, but is shocked when the doll, which he calls Pinocchio, really starts to live. When Pinocchio calls him daddy, he decides to raise him as his son and exchanges his winter coat for a school book.

On the way to school, Pinocchio hears the music of a puppet theater where he wants to go. On the fox's advice, he exchanges his book for a theater ticket. Stromboli, the puppeteer, discovers that Pinocchio is a really living puppet and recruits him for his theater. If he doesn't comply, he punishes the doll who runs off with his money. The fox notices and deceives Pinocchio and steals his buried coins while he sleeps and dreams that his dear father Gepetto is eaten by a whale.

The fairy comes to comfort Pinocchio when he discovers this and she promises to make him a real boy of flesh and blood if he knows the difference between good and evil. Luchinolo, a mischievous boy, tempts Pinocchio to go to the fun island. Once they arrive and start causing mischief, the boys turn into donkeys.

The fox wants to catch the donkeys, but Pinocchio jumps into the sea as a donkey, where he turns back into a doll and is eaten by the whale. There he meets his desperate father, whom he rescues from the belly of the fish. When Pinocchio lands on dry land, his father no longer recognizes him at first. The fairy has turned him into a real boy of flesh and blood as a reward for his good behavior.
