Mondrian and theosophy lecture
Mondrian and theosophical ideas
In 1908 Mondrian attended lectures by Rudolf Steiner for the Dutch Theosophical Society, of which he became a member a year later. Also, in 1908, Mondrian began incorporating theosophical ideas into several paintings. These proved a useful tool for realising his pursuit of total spiritualisation and purity.
Mondrian depicted the notion that death and destruction are necessary for development ('becoming') from the material (matter) to the immaterial (spirit and soul) through flowers in stages of development from the 'natural' to the 'pure' colour. In Paris, Mondrian eventually developed his New Plasticism through Cubism, the ultimate consequence of his pursuit of the unity of body, mind and soul.
