Maria Stuarda
A fatal entanglement of the personal and the political. Elizabeth I, the Queen of England, and Mary Stuart, the Scottish queen in exile, go after each other in a struggle for power, affection and moral equality. Belcanto composer Donizetti placed the fatal conflict between two historical queens in a world of intense emotions with his melodious, poignant music.

Maria Stuarta
Although Elisabeth I and Mary Stuart never actually met, artists have all too often fantasized about a possible meeting between the two. The same goes for Donizetti, who sketches a blood-curdling confrontation scene in his opera. The two queens deal vocal punches, culminating in Stuarda's exclamation 'vil bastarda!' ("Dirty bastard!"). A deeply affected Elisabeth takes revenge in a ruthless way.
