DJ Lynnée Denise brings Sound System Ecologies to the place where many of Amsterdam's keenest listeners have shaped the way they hear: the Bijlmer. In collaboration and conversation with, among others, GembertheeSessions from the Bijlmer Parktheater, Denise puts together a program in which intimate conversations and reflections on process and practice are central.

Sound System Ecologies

Sound System Ecologies asks questions related to music, slavery, and Black spatiality. This project reflects on the importance of how the forced displacement and enslavement of people are accompanied by the travel of sound within former landscapes and water landscapes colonized by the Netherlands.

This evening, visual artist Torkwase Dyson (US) and curatorial theorist Khanyisile Mbongwa (South Africa) offer their frameworks and considerations. Anesu Chigariro (Zimbabwe) will be the moderator.

Sound System Ecologies focuses on the complex ways in which music and ecology are connected. From there it offers a sound-oriented perspective on the history of slavery within the so-called Dutch kingdom. We map - through listening sessions, panel discussions and film screenings - the roots and routes of NL's colonial hand in the social engineering of slavery, apartheid and colonialism.

In doing so, we collectively learn how sound, music, culture and ecology interrupted the colonial grammar of space. We will explore sounds and ecologies from multiple regions with transnational artists, curators and researchers.
