Ghassan Kanafani is considered the father of Palestinian resistance literature. With 'Men in the Sun' he wrote a novella that revolves around the question: who listens to the Palestinians' cry for help? 60 years after publication, the book has been translated into Dutch and this question is more topical than ever. With the war in Gaza in mind, we discuss 'Men in the Sun'.

Men in the sun

Ghassan Kanafani (1936-1972) was a Palestinian writer. He was politically active with the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine. Kanafi was killed at the age of 36 by a car bomb planted by the Mossad. The highlight of his oeuvre is Men in the Sun , which tells the story of 3 Palestinian men who fled the misery of the refugee camps after the Nakba (the expulsion of the Palestinians in 1947-1949). They want to build a life in Kuwait and are waiting in the desert for entry.

Men in the Sun was made into a film as The Dupes . This month, De Balie will show The Dupes twice – on Sunday afternoon, May 12 and on Tuesday evening, May 14. You can buy a combination ticket before May 12. This ticket gives you access to both the film and the conversation.
