Travel with us to Bendikonde, a Surinamese village led by "kabiteni" (captain) Georgetina. Her singing and storytelling, along with hip-hop moves and Awasa dance, form the heart of the performance. With images from Suriname and eclectic, warm, and stirring music, you'll sense how Georgetina safeguards the future of her community, which once resisted slavery. This musical dance performance can be seen at the Bijlmer Parktheater.

Hip-hop meets Surinamese dance

KABITENI energetically brings together a unique history, culture, and innovation in a rich mix of music, dance, and visuals.

Makers

Lloydscompany brings together dancers, emerging urban artists, and the underground battle scene. KABITENI was created by hip-hop theater pioneers Lloyd Marengo (choreography) and Marjorie Boston (direction), with assistance from B-boy Dietrich Pott. In 2022, Marengo won the Golden Swan and Pott the Young Swan.

The "kabiteni" Angelika Naingie starred in the theater production "Sporen van Haar" (Traces of Hair). Kevin Thompson previously danced for the Dutch National Ballet and ISH, Djinti Sullivan played the lead role in "Giselle" by Toneelmakerij & Dox, Ciara Hiwat starred in POWER, which won the BNG Bank Prize, and Uhr'lice Rosaria received a grant from the Vanden Ende Foundation.
