Julidans - OFF VENUE

'OFF VENUE', a collaboration between Juildans and performance festival WhyNot, offers an excellent opportunity to discover Amsterdam in a new way. This edition transforms iconic Amsterdam churches – Vondelkerk, Jerusalemkerk, Posthoornkerk and former church location Bilderdijkpark – into stages for adventurous performances that explore the mysteries of life and emphasize the importance of coming together.

From church to stage

The churches that adorn Amsterdam's cityscape are transformed into stages for the adventurous dance makers Katja Heitmann, Guilherme Miotto, María Del Mar Suárez (La Chachi) and Ropes Aligned & Isabel Cordeiro. Inspired by the centuries-long spiritual and social role of churches, they search for answers to major life questions. What is the meaning of life? What does it mean to be human?

MUSEUM

Choreographer Katja Heitmann works with a growing group of movement archivists to collect movements from people of all ages, places, bodies and backgrounds. With this constantly evolving archive, she creates works of art such as the performance installation MUSEUM, which is staged against the backdrop of the Vondelkerk.

Mondo Perfecto

In Mondo Perfetto, a musical performance by Corpo Máquina Society in and around the Jerusalem Church, choreographer Guilherme Miotto unravels all possible intentions hidden deep in the body. Together with dancer Julia Nielsen, he reduces human existence to a series of boundless vibrations, as a call to unity with ourselves and the world around us. Percussionist Pedro Paixão translates Bach's timeless church organ compositions into marimba, bridging tradition and innovation.

Unfolding Multitudes

The high tower of the Posthoornkerk is the stage for the breathtaking rope dance Unfolding Multitudes, in which bodies float through the air like elementary particles. This unique spectacle is a joint creation of visual artist Isabel Cordeiro, the vertical dance collective Ropes Aligned, and sound artist Gemma Luz Bosch. Visual arts, aerial acrobatics and an impressive sound score come together to challenge gravity.

TARANTO ALEATORIO

In the Bilderdijkpark, where the De Liefde church stood, which was demolished in 1912, two women are eating sunflower seeds. They share a common space, a conversation, the intimacy of silence. The cante (song) and baile (dance) suddenly erupt and transform the everyday scene into a magically intimate spectacle. In this performance, TARANTO ALEATORIO, the Spanish choreographer and dancer María del Mar Suárez (La Chachi) and singer Lola Dolores begin their personal view of the rawness of this palo (form) of flamenco.

Please note: OFF VENUE is a route past different locations with different performances. They recommend that you travel the route by bike so that you get to the performances on time.
