Joshua Serafin: MISS
With no less than 15 winners of international beauty pageants - Miss Universe, Miss World, Miss Earth, Miss International - the Philippines is the clear record holder. Beauty pageants are also common in the country itself. In the city of Cebu, for example, Queen Philippines takes place annually - the largest and most prestigious competition for transgender women. In MISS, dancer Joshua Serafin examines the politics, culture and practices behind the queer beauty industry.

MISS
By zooming in on the strict regime and the strict choreographies, Serafin in MISS denounces the codes of performance that you find in the Philippine transgender beauty pageants. Queerness erases all categorization of femininity and fantasy. Joshua Serafin based MISS on interviews with some regional queens. In this way, he unravelled not only the mechanisms behind the competition but also the religious and colonial influences that persist today.
Please note: the language of this performance is English.
