Hollland Festival: Lukas Avendaño - Lemniskata
An abstract set with huge frames stretched with rope, a sound design for pre-colonial instruments and a powerful group choreography make Mexican artist Lukas Avendaño's first large-scale dance work a poetic journey. The performance can be seen in International Theater Amsterdam.

Lemniskata
14 dancers and an actress depict the origin of all life based on female symbolism from Mexican culture. Using the symbolic serpent that gives birth to itself, the 'lemniscate', a symbol of infinity, Avendaño creates a tribute to femininity and the queer muxe community in Mexico.
Muxes are also referred to as "the third gender." They fulfil a complex social role in Zapotec culture. Unlike the Mexican macho man, they are men with feminine values and behaviours. Avendaño creates a reflection on this muxe community, their sexuality, eroticism and the tension that surrounds it. LEMNISKATA shows man in all his nakedness and vulnerability, and at the same time, is a powerful female resistance against a world dominated by violence and exploitation.
Avendaño: 'Just as this piece pays homage to femininity, it naturally also contains an implicit homage to this muxe community that is stigmatized in many circumstances.'
