Once upon a time… a Chinese king wanted to rule all of China; but there were also three renowned warriors in the service of his enemies who prevented this pursuit. Then a Nameless Warrior (Jet Li) from the province looms at the gates of the Forbidden City. On an audience with the King of Qin, the Nameless recounts his epic victories over Heaven, Broken Sword, and Flying Snow.

With Hero (camera work by Christopher Doyle), Zhang Zhimou achieved his first biggest success in China in 2022; previous titles such as Raise the Red Lantern (1990) and Ju Dou (1990) celebrated triumphs at the art house festivals in the west, but failed to catch on with the Chinese public. The very expensive, lavishly filmed martial arts drama Hero was taken to heart by the Chinese and won an Oscar nomination for Best Foreign Film.
