Ginger Tea Sessions - Adrian van Wyk & Simone Zeefuik

For this year's first edition of the Gemberthee Sessions (Ginger Tea Sessions) we're connecting Bijlmer to Cape Town. We'll do this through the works and research of writer, director, producer, curator and cultural worker Adrian Van Wyk. Simone Zeefuik interviews Adrian about his creative processes and current research projects through which he left decolonial activism in the Netherlands and South Africa. The session opens with the screening of the short documentary What The Soil Remembers. Van Wyk is the producer and researcher of this short film directed by José Cardoso. At Bijlmer Parktheatre.

About Adrian Van Wyk

Adrian Van Wyk is a filmmaker/creative producer and cultural historian from Cape Town, South Africa. He completed an MA in History at Stellenbosch University. His dissertation, titled “From Jamaica to the Cape Flats: Reflecting on the Manifestations of a Cape Town Hip Hop Culture”, unpacked the diasporic movements of Hip Hop culture onto the Cape Flats. His research laid the foundation for the documentary film he is currently co-directing and producing titled “Notes From The Underground: A Cape Town Hip Hop Story”.

The film has received support from the South African National Film and Video Foundation and forms part of a feature film slate currently in collaborative development with Azania Rizing Productions. This includes the magical realist urban adventure film titled ApeTown.

Adrian was nominated by the Mail and Guardian as one of the top 200 South Africans in 2015 in the arts and culture sector. In 2023, a documentary short film that Adrian produced and researched titled What the Soil Remembers enjoyed its world premiere at the International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR) where it was also awarded the Ammodo Tiger Short Award.

The Gemberthee Sessies (Ginger Tea Sessions) is a series of conversations where actors, directors, musicians, writers and other artists talk about their frames of reference, what inspires them, the shoulders on which they stand and the footsteps from which they move. While enjoying some delicious ginger tea from poetry and cocktail bar Labyrinth, the maker joins the host and the audience in a conversation about their work.
