Dutch National Ballet - Four Temperaments
Dutch National Ballet opens the season with Four Temperaments, in which four choreographers from different generations let their own, unique voices be heard through dance. What binds them is that all four emphatically enter into a dialogue with the music they use. In addition to world premieres by Ted Brandsen and Juanjo Arqués, Four Temperaments includes key works from the oeuvre of George Balanchine and Hans van Manen, in which the two master choreographers ingeniously reveal musical details and nuances.
Dutch National Ballet - Four Temperaments
Two masterpieces and two world premieres
In 1940, George Balanchine (1904-1983) commissioned composer Paul Hindemith to write a piece of music that he could play on the piano at home. When the American-Russian choreographer made a ballet based on it in 1946, he knew the composition – The Four Temperaments – through and through. In this way he not only succeeded in creating a work that still excites and surprises more than 75 years later, the spirited, swinging choreography also adds a magical dimension to Hindemith's music.
