About Elizabeth Gilbert

Elizabeth Gilbert was born in Waterbury, Connecticut, in 1969 and grew up in a small Christmas tree farm. She later attended New York University, where she studied political science by day and worked on her short stories by night. After college, she traveled the country for several years, working in bars, eateries, and on ranches, collecting experiences she could use in fiction.

These discoveries ultimately formed the basis of her first book – a collection of short stories called Pilgrims . During these first years in New York, she also worked as a journalist for Spin, GQ and The New York Times Magazine. She was a finalist for The National Magazine Award three times, and an article she wrote in GQ about her experiences as a bartender on the Lower East Side eventually became the basis for the film Coyote Ugly . However, Gilbert is best known for her 2006 memoir Eat Pray Love , in which she describes her journey alone across the world in search of solace after a difficult divorce. The book became an international bestseller and in 2010 , Eat Pray Love was made into a film starring Julia Roberts. The book became so popular that Time Magazine named Gilbert one of the 100 most influential people in the world. In 2015, she published Big Magic: Creative Living Beyond Fear – a book that captures the joyful spirit of adventure and freedom that Elizabeth has always conveyed in her work and in her life.
