Family ties
Van Gogh probably would not have become the painter as we know him without the choices made by his brother Theo, sister-in-law Jo and cousin Vincent of the same name. The temporary exhibition Choosing Vincent. Portrait of a family history tells a personal story through the eyes of Vincent van Gogh and his family. That story also has a universal dimension: the unconditional support of family and a small vanguard often play an essential role in allowing art to flourish.
Like Van Gogh's art, hip-hop culture has been able to grow through the trust and support of a close-knit community. A community that always chose hip-hop, just as the Van Gogh family chose Vincent. Rob Manga was there early. In the early nineties he made a name for himself as a DJ at Bassline, the first hip-hop and R&B night in Amsterdam. He later grew into one of the most respected DJs in the Netherlands, with bookings from Gdansk to Tokyo. He also supported Chaka Khan, Nile Rodgers & Chic, D'Angelo, Angie Stone, Earth, Wind & Fire and De La Soul, among others. During Vincent op Vrijdag he will provide an exclusive DJ set with MC Faisal.
Amsterdam versus Rotterdam
Rob Manga is also part of the Amsterdam Ghetto Funk Collective - a multidisciplinary group of creatives with a great love for dance forms and music from the seventies; especially funk and boogie. During Vincent on Friday the dancers of Ghetto Funk Collective take on XGEN in a battle against XGEN , the renowned Rotterdam dance crew that was founded in 2012 by Steve Lavelua aka Veusty. Unlike Ghetto Funk Collective, XGEN mainly focuses on the styles of house, popping, waacking and hip-hop.
