'Mal de caña', Juan A. Zapata's feature debut, focuses on the victims of slavery on the sugar plantations. Through a series of interviews with witnesses and victims, not only capitalist exploitation is exposed, but also human exploitation and the exploitation of the land itself. The visual stamp of Zapata's work, which stems from his training as an architect and visual artist, combines truthful information with a careful approach to the main characters.

Introduction by Luisa González Valencia (Phd candidate), born and raised in Colombia, is a seasoned professional with ten years of experience in artistic and cultural institutions, specializing in event planning and film programming. She has dedicated her career to documenting grassroots film movements, focusing on filmmakers from rural and marginalized areas

'Transatlántidas. La tercera raíz' is the Latin American Film Festival of the Instituto Cervantes and the African Film Festival of Tarifa-Tangier (FCAT) and includes a selection of four recent films produced in Latin America, which are related to the reality of the Afro-descendant communities in this region.
