A tribute to composing
In 1950, Shostakovich heard the young pianist Tatyania Nikolaeva play all 48 of Bach's preludes and fugues and composed for her, as a homage to Bach – and to the art of composition – his 24 Preludes and Fugues . Superior craftsmanship, but more colored than with Bach by personal emotions.
