Mario Brunello, Alina Ibragimova, Pavel Kolesnikov and Slagwerk Den Haag - Sjostakovitsj' last symphony
About the musical quotes in his last symphony, Shostakovich said he didn't know why they were included either, but he was sure they had to be there. Tormented by the Stalinist terror, the composer was accustomed to concealing what he wanted to express. In Viktor Derevianko's superb, essential-oriented arrangement for piano trio and percussion, this 1971 symphony hits like a sledgehammer. The ambiance of this Late Night concert – in the bare Loading Dock, floating between stage and outside world – is all the more food for thought.

Navigating between life and death
Those quotes in this piece by Shostakovich, of course, meant something to him. In addition to music by Shostakovich himself, fragments of Rossini and Wagner (the telling motif of fate from his Ring cycle) can also be heard. Even without knowing its exact meaning, you can hear that the piece is a retrospective of a composer who navigated between life and death artistically for most of his career. Sometimes grim, sometimes burlesque, sometimes bitter and sad.
