Holland Festival: Euphoria - Julian Rosefeldt
Julian Rosefeldt makes overwhelming, visually breathtaking film installations. His work Euphoria presents the most diverse statements about capitalism in music and film, from Karl Marx and Ayn Rand to Mick Jagger. In this way he makes both the 'euphoric' and the destructive side of consumerism tangible.
Holland Festival: Euphoria - Julian Rosefeldt
Film installation
All senses are stimulated in this large-scale film installation that can be seen in the enormous Central Market Hall in Amsterdam. Lyrics about economics and capitalism are spoken and sung by acclaimed performers such as Giancarlo Esposito and Virginia Newcomb, filmed on impressive locations. Cate Blanchett provides the voice of a talking, singing tiger. In surround video they are musically supported by one hundred and fifty young singers of the Brooklyn Youth Chorus and whipped up by five celebrated contemporary jazz drummers, including Terri Lyne Carrington and Antonio Sanchez.
In his installations, such as in the successful Manifesto with actress Cate Blanchett (Holland Festival 2017), Rosefeldt incorporates existing texts from literature, politics and pop culture and brings them to life in a new context. The real and imaginary scenes then play out in unexpected settings full of subtle cinematographic details and invariably lead to surrealistic scenes that leave a deep impression on the audience.
Commissioned and produced by Park Avenue Armory; co-commissioned by Holland Festival, Ruhrtriennale Festival of the Arts, RISING Melbourne; in collaboration with Sydney Festival and Weltkulturerbe Völklinger Hütte.
