Van Gogh in Auvers, his last months
Hopeful and full of ambition
This exhibition gives you a good picture of the moment Van Gogh arrived in Auvers-sur-Oise, where he set to work full of hope and ambition until his death. He often made more than one painting a day and experimented with colour, brushstroke, formats and subjects.
He was very productive in those months and made some of his most famous masterpieces, such as Wheatfield with Crows, Doctor Paul Gachet and The Church of Auvers-sur-Oise.
Despite the inspiration offered by the new environment, feelings of failure, loneliness and melancholy increasingly prevailed. Ultimately, he chose to end his life and died on 29 July, 1890.
