Unravel – The Power and Politics of Textiles in Art
The role of textiles in art through six themes
The theme 'Subversive Stitch', among other things, shows the resistance to textiles as 'women's work'. The theme 'Fabric of Everyday Life', is about personal stories and lived experiences.
'Borderlands' tells the story of physical and invisible borders. 'Bearing Witness' shows works with textiles as social and socio-political commentary.
The theme 'Wound and Repair' sees textiles as a restorative and healing medium and the sixth and final theme 'Ancestral Threads' is about the lives and techniques of ancestors and alternative knowledge systems.
The works in Unravel are radical in both form and content, encompassing a wide range of shapes, formats, techniques and perspectives, and are sometimes based on historical methods or on new, experimental processes.
