Solo exhibition The Call of the Jackdaw - photographer Rianne Tegelaar

The Call of the Jackdaw.  Somewhere in our childhood, there comes a moment when our perspective on the world changes. Suddenly, we become spectators of the world around us instead of being a part of it. The natural feeling of being in harmony with our surroundings gives way to something else. The Call of the Jackdaw explores this transition from an intuitive, sensory view of the world to a more observational and distant perspective. The project stems from an elusive longing for a lost connection with the world around us. The childlike unity with our environment as experienced in our youth, a time untouched by the shadows of adulthood. Far from a world that rushes relentlessly, the Call of the Jackdaw creates a landscape where child, animal, and nature miraculously merge. Amidst the dense vegetation, the boundaries of reality blur, creating a place that exists more in the realm of imagination than on a map. The title whispers through the series like a secret password granting us access to this forest. It opens the door to a place that brings us closer to the core of an untouched, authentic world. Acting as a guide to the essence of an unspoiled, genuine world. Nevertheless, the echo of times past always lingers, a silent reminder of what once was.

Rianne Tegelaar (1981) captures emotions and atmosphere through photography. Her work is influenced by magical realism, a style that combines elements of dream and reality. With muted colors and subtle lighting, she creates a soft, essential serenity thereby eliciting a sense of wonder. Through philosophical perspectives, Rianne investigates themes such as transformation, authenticity, connection and innocence in her work. Her work is an invitation to reflect on the challenges people face in a rapidly evolving world, where the pressure of time and social norms is often overwhelming. After graduating from the Fotoacademie in May 2023, Rianne's series The Call of the Jackdaw was on the long list of the Incadaques Festival, and her book was selected for Off Bratislava. She was selected by GUP Magazine as one of the FRESH EYES International Talents 2023. Rianne is co-founder of the collective 'Gravity of Light', which organized its first group exhibition in October 2023. In the beginning of February 2024 her work was also shown on Photo Rotterdam, during Rotterdam Art Week.
