Première expositie A Bear in the Backyard van Zilveren Camera winnaar David Hup

On Friday 17 March, the solo exhibition 'A Bear in the Backyard' by award-winning photographer David Hup opens – another wonderful first in Atelier K84 on the Keizersgracht in Amsterdam. Because for the first time David's originally documentary-journalistic work - until now shared through magazines and articles - can be admired in an exhibition. From thousands of images, a series of powerful works has been selected that best conveys its message, presented on the walls of Atelier K84. As usual at Atelier K84, David Hup will always be present in the art space during opening hours.

David Hup's photography

has as its main goal to create awareness for our impact on nature and to find a sustainable basis for co-extinction. This theme comes together in the project 'A Bear in the Backyard', which he has been working on for five years. The project illustrates life's ongoing struggle with bears in Romania. How do bears and humans interact? Does the bear threaten humans or is it the other way around? 'A Bear in the Backyard' can be seen as an absurd metaphor in which many parallels can be drawn to our own environment.

A Bear in the Backyard. The fascinating story of 'A Bear in the Backyard' shows how humans and animals live together in one of the last parts of Europe where real wilderness can still be found: Transylvania in central Romania. About six thousand bears live here, more than half of the European population. This iconic animal has been intertwined with Romanian cultural identity for centuries. However, in addition to admiration for these animals, more and more problems arise. Due to a continuous shrinkage of their habitat and a shortage of food, bears are increasingly forced to descend from the primeval forests to the inhabited world. With this project, David Hup offers a unique perspective on the delicate balance between man and nature in modern society.

David Hop . Growing up in a densely populated neighborhood in Amsterdam, David Hup (1995) has been fascinated from an early age by the tension between humans and animals. Based on this fascination, he investigates how we interact with nature and how our presence influences ecosystems. David uses photography to document and illustrate stories. With his documentary-journalistic approach, he captures the natural moments of his subjects in a casual way.

David's work has appeared in national and international media such as NRC Handelsblad, Het Parool, BBC Wildlife Magazine and The Guardian. His work has also won prizes including the Zilveren Camera 2020 (3rd prize) and 2022 (1st prize), Nature Photographer of the Year and European Wildlife of the Year.
