Ongekend.Weesp. (Exceptional.Weesp.)

Barely two years ago, Weesp became part of the municipality of Amsterdam. But who is the resident of Weesp, and what makes the old fortress town so special? You'll experience that during the interactive exhibition Ongekend.Weesp, opening its doors on 23 February. Please note that the exhibition will be predominantly in Dutch.

Stories Through Art - An Exhibition of Diversity and Creativity

Maria Mihailova, project leader of the art and storytelling project, shares, 'Last year, I issued a call in the local media among the residents of Weesp and Driemond to share their stories. I received beautiful responses from all sides.' She gathered beautiful and intimate stories in conversations with the residents, from a woman from Afghanistan to a snack bar owner who cares for the youth. Maria says, 'These stories have been compiled into a magazine and form the basis for the artworks displayed during the exhibition.' She asked four artists to provide a creative interpretation of the stories. The exhibition is a compilation of various art forms, from a photo exhibition and light installation to an audio work.

The exhibition

One of the artists is performer and singer Karlijn Hamer. 'I focused on the role of language in the interaction between Weesp residents,' says Karlijn. 'I use the collected conversations with the participants as the basis for an audio fragment visitors can listen to with headphones.'

In addition to Karlijn Hamer, the exhibition features visual artist Herman Lamers, dancer Goda Zukauskaite, and photographers Donata Kukyte and Reinier van der Aart. Together, they provide an intimate insight into the shared stories. The exhibition is open to the public for free from February 23 to March 31, 2024.
