Menno Pasveer: An Ode to Felling Trees
Ode to felling trees
Pasveer has just graduated from the visual arts department of the Royal Academy of Arts in The Hague. Pasveer produced 15 new paintings for his first solo exhibition, ranging from realism to complete abstraction. The series touches on the beauty of physical labour, craftsmanship and machines. The viewer is immersed in scenes of chainsaws, flying wood chips, jerry cans and craftsmen working diligently high in trees.
Menno Pasveer investigates the formal aspects of painting, such as grisaille, the interplay of transparent and opaque layers, and the intensity of different brushstrokes. Sometimes, the job requires an ultra-thin brush, but other times, he also works with a 6-inch wide spatula or a sponge. He even has a chainsaw for a brush.
