Martin Monnickendam
The museum recently received a special donation from the Foundation Friends of the Painter Martin Monnickendam: a (self)portrait of the painter Martin Monnickendam with his sister Rachel Monnickendam (1879-1942). The portrait has been restored and is now, together with two other works, on display for the first time in the Jewish Museum.

About Martin Monnickendam
Monnickendam was born in 1874 into a prosperous, liberal Jewish family. He attended the Rijksacademie voor Beeldende Kunst in Amsterdam, after which he continued his education in Paris. This period was decisive for Monnickendam's work. He met famous artists and developed his painting style.
In 1901, Monnickendam returned to Amsterdam, where he became a member of, among other things, the artists' association Arti et Amicitiae and Vereniging Sint Lucas. He remained internationally oriented, travelled extensively, and had exhibitions at home and abroad. The jubilee exhibition in honour of his fiftieth birthday at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam in 1924 was a highlight in his career. Martin Monnickendam died on 4 January 1943 from pneumonia.
