Knowing Cotton Otherwise - Bodies of Work
Cotton is one of the most-used fabrics in the world, but many stories behind cotton are less well known. These unknown, sometimes unexpected, perspectives have been collected and brought together in the series Knowing Cotton Otherwise. The next chapter of the exhibition titled Bodies of Work takes a broader perspective, exploring the fraught history of cotton and examining its (re)use in fashion and technology.
Knowing Cotton Otherwise - Bodies of Work
Fashion, art and social change
The exhibition highlights the relationship between cotton and the fashion industry, the role of cotton in an increasingly intertwined web of global cultures, and the sustainable innovations that are driving circular transformation within the cotton industry. The exhibition asks questions such as where does cotton come from? How is it cultivated? What is the future of cotton and the role of innovation? How should we relate to the more questionable aspects of cotton, from the history of forced migration to more contemporary challenges? And how can we celebrate the connections and opportunities it creates?
Bodies of Work
Last year Fashion for Good introduced Knowing Cotton Otherwise, a multidisciplinary exhibition that explores different aspects of this versatile fibre - from its fraught history to sustainable initiatives and innovative implementations worldwide. The new chapter, Bodies of Work, highlights the experiences of human bodies entangled in (forced) labour within the story of cotton.
With the new work of Sha'Mira Covington and Tricia Nganga Mokosi, the exhibition tells the complex history of cotton. It explores this fabric's (re)use in fashion and technology. In addition, the exhibition shows innovative technologies in the traceability of materials and the recycling of natural fibres by Fashion for Good Innovators Oritain and Natural Fiber Welding. The continuation of the exhibition invites you to reflect on your own embodiment as you move through this narrative and space. Where do you find yourself within the story world presented here?
