Humour as the ultimate armour

This group show features seven international artists in a colonial setting, created with objects on loan from the Cultural Heritage Agency of the Netherlands. It is a special collaboration in the year that the abolition of slavery is commemorated. Curator Claudio Ritfeld chose the artists because of how they reclaim properties, terms and objects in their art that were given meaning by the colonizer.

The exhibition investigates whether humour can be used as a shield against racism and oppression and whether it is possible to use art as therapy: the exhibition uses an EMDR audio (EMDR is a form of trauma therapy) to develop cognitive connections to images that have evoked negative feelings for centuries.

Knights in Shining Armour also shows an alternative approach to historical objects and intangible relics from our colonial past.

The exhibition opens on 11 May. To attend the opening event, sign up via this link.
