Keith Haring - Amsterdam Notes
Longer than two trucks and unseen for almost three decades. Amsterdam Notes is one of the largest-ever museum pieces by artist and activist Keith Haring, and it will hang in the hall of honour, the IMC Gallery, from 26 May. Haring is as popular as ever thanks to his instantly recognizable, accessible style. His socially engaged work often tackles socio-political issues such as war, racism, drugs and AIDS, themes that resonate with many people today.

Haring's other side
American artist Keith Haring made the 38-metre-long drawing entitled Amsterdam Notes in 1986, especially for his first museum exhibition at Stedelijk. The work is unique in many respects compared to Haring's other work. The black ink drawing framed in red acrylic paint is probably one of his most extraordinary museum pieces.
Imaginative monsters and colossal animals have replaced the typical images of barking dogs, dancing dolls and beaming babies. Human figures dance, make love, fly and jump between these creatures. Unlike what the American is known for, the composition is spatial and less filling the screen.
The drawn fish are probably a playful nod to the American's Dutch surname. Amsterdam Notes shows another side of Haring and marks his way to world fame.
