Exhibition: We are here - A shared past, Muslims tell

The long history of Muslims in the Netherlands

Muslims have been part of the Netherlands for centuries. Yet the public story often only begins with the labor migration in the 1960s. This exhibition tells a different story. It shows how Muslims, generation after generation, played a role in society. Sometimes clearly visible, often in the background – but always present.

The exhibition is an initiative of the Muslim Archive Foundation. Using personal objects, archive material and lived stories, you will gain a new perspective on history. Three communities are central: Moluccan Muslims, Javanese-Surinamese Muslims and Hindustani-Surinamese Muslims. The historical connection between Amsterdam and Islam is also discussed. Not as separate events, but as part of a shared past.

Summer program

There is a summer program around the exhibition. There are city walks in Amsterdam-Oost and Nieuw-West, bike tours along places with an Islamic past and weekly guided tours by involved members of the archive. Registration starts on May 12 via www.moslimarchief.nl.
