Brand new artwork in Nieuw-West

5713: a special work of art

Over the past year, De Appel has worked with a group of Teen Curators (young people from Nieuw-West) on a new work of art in a public space. This work of art is attached to the facade of Podium, a new building on Schipluidenlaan, next to the iconic Lely building.

The artwork consists of a hand-drawn carpet (9x6 meters, perforated in aluminum) by artist Narges Mohammadi and a poem by spoken word artist Zeinab El Bouni. It depicts the memories of young people about their high school period and the experiences of growing up in Nieuw-West.

The title, 5713 , is a reference to the original GVB zone number of Amsterdam-West. It is still common practice to use this number to indicate where you live and where you come from.

The opening program was conceived and organized in collaboration with the Teen Curators: Oumaima, Haifae, Hajar, Yahya, Ibrahim, Duahan, Safae, Irem, Ayman, Menna, Beyda and Ferat.
