Bas Kosters: Under The Resting Clouds
Galerie Bart cordially invites you to the festive opening of a new solo exhibition Under The Resting Clouds, by Bas Kosters. Bas was artist-in-residence at the European Ceramic Work Center (EKWC) at the end of 2022. There he expanded his knowledge of materials and made a series of ceramic works. This series is now being shown in its entirety in the gallery for the first time and is complemented by drawings made during the same period.
Bas Kosters: Under The Resting Clouds
Visual language in ceramics is an ode to joy and stillness
The work of the multidisciplinary artist can be recognised by his unique visual language. Using drawings, paintings, collages, sculptures, installations, jewellery, graphic design, photography, music, performances and costumes, Bas creates a world in which social and personal themes are discussed. With his colourful, striking and naive figures, some of which reappear repeatedly in his work, he makes an inner journey. By visualizing subjects such as joy and emotional self-awareness, Bas evokes recognition in the viewer without becoming pedantic. There is no purpose, just casualness.
Textile bear
It was the first time that Bas made work from ceramics, and the step from textile to clay did not come naturally during his working period at the EKWC. That's why Bas started with something he already knew. During his research project on joy, a textile bear was born called JOBE, short for Joy Bear. Bas made a mould of this bear to make ceramic bears. The first six bears of the series can now be seen in the exhibition.
Loving drawings about emotional awareness
Bas is an avid draftsman, and a new series was also created during his working period at the EKWC: Sincerely yours, a series of personal and loving drawings about emotional awareness. Bas sees it as a luxury that he can reflect on the question every day: 'How do I feel today?' There is more talk about feelings today than ever before. Could this be a characteristic of the current generation or an outcome of our hyper-complicated lives? And, Bas wonders: when there is so much thought and talk about emotions, is it really felt?
Under The Resting Clouds is an ode to joy and stillness and invites you to look at the world around you.
