Amsterdam in stained glass
Craft
Robin Kapitein is an artist who has breathed new life into the ancient craft of stained glass. Typical Amsterdam characteristics can be seen in his work, but also influences from hip-hop and street culture. Robin is creating new work especially for this exhibition in the Red Salon of the museum, in which he incorporates the canals of Amsterdam and other Amsterdam icons in his own characteristic style.
Listen to the artist
In the audio tour, Robin talks about his love for this art form and explains the works of art on display.
Captain: “As a painter, I mainly worked on houses on the canals, where I came across a lot of stained glass. I always had to be very careful with that, and that's how stained glass became something special to me. I immersed myself in the craft, but wanted to do something more modern with it. I draw inspiration from the city and its culture, nature and people. This results in contemporary designs with bright colors and coarse and dark lines. During corona it has grown from a hobby into my work, and I am now very proud that I can exhibit my latest work in the Grachtenmuseum.”
