Marsalis' Swing Symphony

The Noord Nederlands Orkest and ZO! Gospel Choir led by Wayne Marshall bring swinging music to the Main Hall, including the Swing Symphony by Wynton Marsalis. The colorful and intensely musical trumpeter and composer Marsalis wrote his third symphony in 2010: the Swing Symphony . He was inspired by greats such as Ives, Gershwin, Copland, Bernstein and Ellington, he had a musical meditation on American ideals in mind. The symphony is seen as a modern classic in the spirit of American optimism, which encompasses the full breadth of twentieth-century orchestral music. An evening full of harmony, color and rhythmic richness.

Traditional Gospels

The precursors of gospel music are the African-American spirituals, spiritual songs on biblical themes. At the beginning of the twentieth century, many African-American communities emigrated from the countryside to the city, bringing their religious culture with them. The churches in the northern cities became the most important environment for the development of gospel music. Greats of color such as Mahalia Jackson, but also the white superstar Elvis Presley placed gospel and its secular companion, the blues, in the center of attention.
