Winner Boy Edgarprijs 2024: Tony Roe

The Boy Edgar Prize, the most important prize in the Netherlands in the field of jazz and improvised music, was awarded this year to pianist, composer and bandleader Tony Roe. He combines elements from classical music, hip-hop, electronic music and Latin American rhythms and creates a completely unique musical experience. With Jamie Peet and Pat Cleaver he forms the jazz piano trio 'Tin Men and the Telephone', for which he composes the music, creates interactive visuals and always seeks contact with the audience with the help of self-developed software.

His show 'Modular Piano' is a collaboration with audiovisual artist Marcel Wierckx, in which synthesizers and interactive image projections are controlled by the grand piano. Roe regularly plays with various artists and ensembles, such as Nai Barghouti, Vernon Chatlein, NBE and Ben van Gelder. He previously worked with the Metropole Orchestra, ISH Dance Collective, Noord Nederlands Toneel (NNT), Asko|Schönberg Ensemble, Room Eleven, and Janne Schra.

Award ceremony The award ceremony will take place later this fall.

Roe will then be rewarded with the prize money of €25,000 and the bronze rotating sculpture 'John Coltrane' by Jan Wolkers. About the Boy Edgar Prize The Boy Edgar Prize is the most important prize in Dutch jazz and improvised music. The prize is named after the Amsterdam jazz trumpeter and big band leader Boy Edgar. Edgar made an important contribution to the recognition of jazz as a high-quality art form.

Since 2022, the Performing Arts Fund has organized the selection process and awards the prize each year to a performing musician who makes a special contribution to the genre. The prize is supported by Buma Cultuur, Sena Performers and North Sea Jazz. Previous winners of the prize include Monica Akihary, Ronald Snijders, Ack van Rooyen and Tineke Postma.
