Who was Olly - Anssi Karttunen
Composer and conductor Oliver Knussen passed away in 2018. Not only did the music world lose a great man with him, but above all, a beloved and amiable person. Knussen was also a welcome guest in the Music Building. Numerous colleagues spontaneously honoured him by composing a tribute, including Kaija Saariaho, Rob Zuidam and Mark-Anthony Turnage. Cellist Anssi Karttunen brings all these works together tonight. Karttunen also plays two short solos by Knussen himself, with whom he was good friends: Tarantella (on the letters of the name 'Saariaho') and Eccentric melody, an enchanting gem.

17 composers
Not including Knussen himself, there will be pieces by no fewer than seventeen composers tonight. Some studied with Knussen, such as Augusta Read Thomas and Mark-Anthony Turnage; others were friends or close colleagues. The contributions are stylistically very diverse, creating a beautiful picture of the times. The closing is the soundscape 'O-lude' by Zoe Martlew. Videos will also be shown and memories of 'Olly', as Knussen was known, will be recalled.
