Bruckner's Symphony No. 1

Anton Bruckner's First Symphony is rarely performed. A pity, because this delightful journey through the Austrian countryside of Bruckner's youth is a worthy start to his symphonic oeuvre. Conductor Vladimir Jurowski considers it 'an incredible artistic achievement to write such a symphony ten years before the completion of Brahms' First . Bruckner takes Schubert's lyrical symphonic style to the extreme, and even further. In this, the essence of all his later symphonies is clearly felt.

Mozart's tempestuous Fortieth

At the premiere of Bruckner's First Symphony in Linz, the audience was mainly surprised that their city organist could write great symphonies. Shortly afterwards, the ambitious Bruckner moved to Vienna, the city of his predecessors Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven and Schubert. In his First Symphony, these Viennese-classical influences are still very clear. Vladimir Jurowski links Bruckner's First Symphony to Mozart's penultimate symphony, the tempestuous Fortieth , which already announced the Romantic period.

Vladimir Jurowski has been a popular guest conductor with the Concertgebouw Orchestra since 2006, with a versatile repertoire; he has never conducted Bruckner in Amsterdam before.
